People commonly search for a “free government tablet,” but Lifeline itself is primarily a federal communications-support program. It does not mean the federal government automatically gives every Lifeline applicant a tablet.
A participating provider may separately make a free or low-cost tablet offer available to an eligible customer. Government Tablet may offer a no-cost tablet when available, subject to verified eligibility, service territory, device inventory and current offer terms.
