Quick eligibility

Two Main Ways You May Qualify for Lifeline

You generally need one valid qualification path. Final eligibility must be verified through the applicable Lifeline process.

Qualifying program

SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, qualifying Veterans benefits, or an eligible Tribal program may provide a Lifeline qualification path.

Review program-based eligibility

Household income

A household may qualify when gross household income is at or below 135% of the applicable Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Clear program language

What Does “Free Government Tablet” Mean?

People commonly search for a “free government tablet,” but Lifeline itself is primarily a federal communications-support program. It does not mean the federal government automatically gives every Lifeline applicant a tablet.

A participating provider may separately make a free or low-cost tablet offer available to an eligible customer. Government Tablet may offer a no-cost tablet when available, subject to verified eligibility, service territory, device inventory and current offer terms.

The accurate sequence is: qualify for Lifeline, complete required verification, confirm provider service availability, then review the current tablet offer.

Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)

Participation in qualifying federal public housing assistance can establish program-based eligibility.

Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit

The qualifying Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit programs are recognized Lifeline eligibility pathways.

Qualifying Tribal programs can include:

  • Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
  • Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Tribal TANF)
  • Head Start, when the household meets the Lifeline income-qualifying standard
  • Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)

What You May Need

The official Lifeline process may verify information automatically. If it cannot, it may request acceptable supporting information.

  • Your state, ZIP code and residential address
  • Basic identity and contact information required by the application
  • The qualifying program you participate in, or household size and income route
  • Supporting proof only if the applicable verification process requests it
Government Tablet does not request Social Security numbers, identity uploads, Medicaid IDs, EBT numbers or benefit documents through this preliminary form.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers about Lifeline eligibility, tablet offers, program verification and Government Tablet.

Is a free tablet guaranteed?

No. Lifeline does not guarantee a tablet. Eligible customers may qualify for a no-cost tablet offer from Government Tablet when available. Eligibility, service area, device availability and offer terms apply.

Does SNAP or an EBT card qualify for Lifeline?

SNAP is a Lifeline-qualifying program. An EBT card is commonly how SNAP benefits are accessed, but the application must verify qualifying SNAP participation; simply possessing a card should not be treated as an automatic approval.

Does Medicaid qualify for Lifeline?

Medicaid is a Lifeline-qualifying program. Participation can satisfy Lifeline's program-based eligibility requirement, subject to verification. Medicaid itself does not send or guarantee a tablet.

Is the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) still active?

No. The FCC states that the ACP monthly broadband benefit ended on June 1, 2024. Government Tablet does not present ACP enrollment as active.

What is Lifeline?

Lifeline is a federal communications support program administered by USAC under FCC rules. It helps qualifying low-income consumers obtain discounted communications service through participating service providers.

What income level can qualify for Lifeline in 2026?

For the standard income pathway, gross household income must be at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. The exact dollar limit depends on household size and whether the household is in the contiguous states and DC, Alaska, or Hawaii.

Can two people in one household receive separate Lifeline benefits?

Lifeline is limited to one benefit per household. People who share an address but do not share income and expenses may be separate households under Lifeline rules and may need to complete a household worksheet.

Are tablet offers available everywhere?

No. Service territory, device inventory, program eligibility and current offer terms can vary. An available tablet offer should be confirmed as part of the provider application process.

What documents may be required?

The National Verifier or applicable state process may be able to verify information automatically. If not, you may be asked for acceptable proof of identity, address, income or qualifying-program participation. Government Tablet's general website forms do not accept those sensitive documents.

How do I apply?

Start with Government Tablet's preliminary eligibility and application form. Lifeline eligibility must then be verified through the applicable program process before service enrollment can be completed. Texas and Oregon use state-specific eligibility processes.

Is GovernmentTablet.online a government website?

No. GovernmentTablet.online is operated by a Lifeline service provider and is not a government agency. Lifeline eligibility is determined under applicable program rules.

Ready to check your Lifeline eligibility?
